KYTHNOS
GREECE
According to Greek mythology, Cyclades were daughters of Oceanus and Tethys, who were transformed into rocks by Poseidon. Well if this was true, then Kythnos would be the wildest one or maybe a secret rebel.

Located in the heart of Cyclades, somewhere between Kea and Serifos and easily reachable by ferry, Kythnos island has still something wild and untouched. A rare oddity in today’s world? Kythnos has the magic of a Greek island. And this was clear from the very first hours of my Kythnian adventure.

1, 2, 3, 4…10…20…I caught myself counting waves while sitting at the only taverna of Flabouria village. I looked around me. Stillness. I was all alone. ‘This is Greek summer’ I thought.

Sfougato

There was something unique in the way the Greek salad perfectly fitted next to the cold Fix beer, just opposite the garlicky tzatziki dish and between the bread and the homemade revithada. And there was something unique in the way all these perfectly fitted with the sound of waves. Just the sound of waves. No other sound.

In a noisy world, isn’t it quite something to find an island, where the only thing you can hear is the sound of waves, where you are almost alone on the beach, where there are neighbourhoods with only one taverna, where roads are not proper roads and where galaktoboureko - Greek custard pie - is properly homemade and delicious? It is. And that’s Kythnos…quite something!

For great swims head to Flabouria, Apokrousi and Aosa beach. For beautiful views and a bit of self pampering stay at Yfes.

For a more tranquil lunch or dinner, homemade revithada and the best galaktoboureko on Kythnos head to Flabouriotis, a tiny family taverna on Flabouria beach.

For an elevated dinner, great cocktails and Greek food with a twist try Margiora located in Chora, the island’s main town. For great fish eat at Ostria Restaurant in Merichas.

And last but not least…a tip from a cheese lover to other fellow cheese lovers out there: Kythnos is famous for its locally produced cheeses. So don’t leave the island without trying Xino cheese or Trima cheese and the famous Sfougato dish.
