Let me start by saying one thing. Krone Restaurant is not only the best place to eat some of the most authentic South Tyrolian dishes – clearly influenced by Austro-Hungarian flavours. It is also where you will find one of the most intimate, cozy, and elegant in its own way, dining spaces in the Dolomites region – especially if you book a table in the old ‘stube’ with only four tables.
Housed in a 16th century building and located in the tiny village of Aldino, Krone is a family-run restaurant with a certain magic. It has the magic of a family meal, a real family meal.
Katharina will always greet with a kind smile, the old ‘nonna’ together with one of her sons will personally supervise and prepare most of the dishes in the kitchen while, if you are lucky enough, you might come across some of the family’s grand daughters who will be practicing their piano skills in the room next door.
Now, let’s talk food! Krone’s menu changes according to the season. Most vegetables come from the family’s own garden while every dish is based on tradition and simplicity. You cannot detect any culinary pretentiousness. Dishes are so humble and honest, exactly like the place and its owners.
My favourite period to visit Krone? October or November, when it starts getting cold outside and all you want is stay warm, cozy, and full! What to order? If you want to try some autumn flavours, try the pumpkin soup, the boiled vegetables from the garden or the homemade potato gnocchi with locally collected honey mushrooms or Chiodini in Italian!
If you are a meat lover, try the deer – always sourced locally. If on the other hand you have a sweet tooth, go for the crème brulé – not really a local dish but it is done to perfection so no wonder why it’s still in their menu!
Bottom line? Krone is a secret gem full of character. It’s not for everyone. It’s for those that crave genuine flavours, honest ingredients, and sincere discussions around food! Just call before heading there to make sure they are open!
