BREAKFAST IN VIENNA

AUSTRIA

Vienna is a place with plenty of breakfast options, especially if you are just looking for a coffee and a quick bite. The city is full of cafes and bars, some more old-fashioned and classic, and some with a more edgy touch. But if you are looking to treat yourself to something a little bit more special this is where to have breakfast in Vienna.

Neue Hoheit. If you find yourself in one of the most central parts of Vienna and you need a break from the sea of tourists that stroll around at a very slow pace or if you simply fancy some classic breakfast dishes with interesting views, try Neue Hoheit Restaurant. Located inside Rosewood Hotel, Neue Hoheit offers not only great rooftop views – for a bit, I felt like a little bird flying from roof to roof - but also a roof terrace for sunny moments.

If you are a buffet lover, you can opt for the buffet option while if you know exactly what you want and you like enjoying a lazy morning without thinking of refilling your glass or plate - just like me - you can go for the a la carte menu. In both cases there is plenty of choice: from eggs benedict and avocado on toast to more healthy options such as yogurt with granola and fruits.

Meierei. Located in the heart of Stadt Park, Meierei is by far one of the most tranquil places to have breakfast in Vienna. Just think of a little green oasis, which blends easy mornings with flavour.

What to expect? A serene vibe, real attention to details, an excellent cheese selection, and truly interesting dishes beyond the ordinary. Apart from scrambled eggs with mushrooms and chillies or an organic cheese omelette, you can enjoy unique dishes such as marinated salmon trout - the best I’ve ever had - or rhubarb vanilla tart.

It is somehow obvious that at Meierei they know how to create an elevated culinary experience. A must for every foodie out there!

Glasswing. Glasswing is another must-visit destination for all food lovers in Vienna. Served in the same space of the Michelin-starred restaurant, ‘Glasswing by Alexandru Simon’, and prepared in the very same open kitchen, breakfast there is a great way to start your day and simply spoil yourself.

Excellent service and excellent cooking techniques take breakfast classics to the next level. This is where I had the best eggs benedict I have ever had. Let me not speak about the bacon...so addictive that I ordered a second one!

Meinklang Hofladen. Located in a cute neighbourhood, a few streets away from the mess of Naschmarkt, Meinklang is a small neighbourhood cafe and a farm shop.

If you know to appreciate proper sourdough bread, fresh asparagus, a great cup of herbal tea, a delicious cinnamon bun and some of the best pastel de nata in town, you will love it!

And if you don't find a table - it can get really busy - just grab some pastries, cheese and bread from their farm shop and make your own breakfast!

Ototo. Technically speaking Ototo is not a proper breakfast place. It is something between a coffee shop and a food store. But it is the perfect ‘grab and go’ breakfast place for the busiest mornings. This is where you can combine some food shopping with great cakes, magazines and independent products that you might not be able to find anywhere else in Vienna.

And if you love combining your morning coffee with a great read, check out their journals and magazines – an interesting selection for sure!
