FOOD ON BOCAS DEL TORO

PANAMA

When it comes to food, there are many options in the main town but I would go for the hidden places.

The hidden places are more special, less busy and definitely more romantic! So if you are up for something different, here are my favourite places!

The Firefly, on Isla Bastimentos, is one of my preferred spots for dinner – and not only since they often organize yoga sessions too. Lauren is the chef and Ryan makes sure you never run out of drinks.

The little details do make the difference in this case: colourful pillows, little string lights hanging from the trees and cute painting patterns on the tables is the main reason why to fall in love with this place - and it is pretty romantic too when it gets dark.

The menu is small but if Lauren is in the kitchen anything you order is satisfying. Don’t expect to find solely local dishes since most of the menu is influenced by Asian flavours. Leave some space for dessert because you can’t leave this place without trying the chocolate chip bread pudding with cinnamon and rum. Yummy! Just one tip…make sure you book in advance since the place is tiny.

If you feel like trying something more local and less fancy, visit ‘Alvin’ also located on Isla Bastimentos. The place is hidden behind local houses and backyards so you will need to walk through them before you end up enjoying some food on Alvin’s wooden terrace built on the sea.

The octopus - or pulpo as locals call it - is an excellent option as well as the freshly squeezed exotic juices.

But, whatever you do and wherever you go while visiting Bocas del Toro, there is one place that you can’t miss. Stop at Coral Cay and at a tiny bar restaurant called Crawl Cay. This tiny island is located between Isla Bastimentos and Isla Popa. You can reach it by hiring a boat for the day or by water taxi.

It is built on the sea so customers can combine snorkeling with a snack or a drink. it’s the best place to have a piña colada wearing just your swimsuit. The best pina colada I had in my entire life. I totally mean it!
